MPJE: Pharmacy manager responsibilities in different settings
Pharmacists and pharmacy managers (PIC) will work in different pharmacy settings throughout their careers. Therefore it is essential to be aware that PIC responsibilities can differ across settings. PIC should know the state and Federal pharmacy law requirements that govern their practice setting. In this article, we highlight some of these differences. Keep in mind that these are not mutually exclusive, and you will find the responsibilities between settings blend together in some instances.
The MPJE exam might have questions about this topic as well.
-
Retail pharmacy: managing the operations of a retail pharmacy, ensuring quality of prescription dispensing, supervising staff, handling customer service and complaints.
-
Hospital pharmacy: ensuring medication availability and proper medication use, supervising and training staff, managing drug procurement and inventory control, participating in patient care rounds.
-
Long-term care pharmacy: managing medication dispensing and delivery to long-term care facilities, working with healthcare providers to ensure appropriate medication therapy, managing staff and finances.
-
Clinical pharmacy: providing patient-centered medication management, collaborating with healthcare providers, participating in research, providing drug information and education.
Overall, the responsibilities of a pharmacy manager vary depending on the type and size of the pharmacy setting, the state regulations, and the specific needs of the patients being served.
